Toys for Hill Country Tots

The Kerrville Sunrise Lions completed their 2008 Toys for Hill Country Tots program by conducting the distribution of toys on Saturday, December 20th 2008.

The program has been in effect since 1985 when all the Kerrville Lions clubs agreed to take over the local program from a national business.  Since then the other Kerrville clubs have developed other programs to fill other needs of the community at Christmas and the Kerrville Sunrise Lions club has continued the program.  The club works closely with the local DHS office that provide the club with a breakdown of toys needed by child’s age and gender. Toys are provided for boys and girls from age one to thirteen.  DHS issues the recipients with a coupon which is redeemed for one toy.

Most of the toys are funded by proceeds from the Kerrville Sunrise Lions participation in the Wild Game Dinner and our Flag Program.  Local businesses graciously allow collection boxes for toys to be donated in their office lobbies.  Additionally, a softball tournament is held each year in early December where the participants’ entry fee is a toy.

This year thanks are due to the generosity of the publics' donation of toys, which included four bicycles and a motorized skateboard.  These special toys which were allocated by a giving each family present at the distribution a coupon which they could then place in a drawing for one of these items.

The distribution was held in the First United Methodist Church of Kerrville's activity center. Lions are engage in buying toys starting in late November with the bulk of them purchased in the two weeks prior to the distribution. In the week prior to the distribution the toys are counted and sorted into the age groups for display. The night before the distribution Lions, acting as elves, set up the distribution center tables in preparation for the big day.

Over 700 toys were distributed on Saturday. In addition to providing toys for families selected by DHS, toys and/or some funds to buy toys were provided to CPS Foster Program, CPS Family Preservation Unit, Any Baby Can, Hill Country Crisis Council, Kstar and two families who were victims of recent house fires.

Thank you to all who have supported the Kerrville Sunrise Lions projects throughout the year so we may help local children receive a present at Christmas. Visit our photo pages to see details of the distribution!

Flag program

The Kerrville Sunrise Lions have many projects among them placing of the American flag and/or Texas flag to over 300 local businesses on National and State holidays.  Next Flag Distribution is on President's Day - February 16, 2009

Computer Center

One of our members is also collecting older used computers and rebuilding them with some new hardware and software. These are  then donated to needy families or orginzations who have a demonstrated need and can use  a rebuilt computer.

Many have been donated to schools in Mexico and in Del Rio, also as well as local. We recently donated 4 computers to the Kerrville State Hospital, volunteer council for use in teaching residents digital photography. We also delivered 12 complete units to the Medina, School for children and 6 to the local Christians Woman  Job Corps. Our sincere thanks to all who donated used computers.
